Consisting of 12 clubs, the season typically spanned from early February to late October, with a break during Ramadan depending on the Islamic calendar. Each team played 22 matches, facing every other team both at home and away, resulting in a total of 132 matches per season. Matches were primarily held on Fridays, although some were scheduled on weekdays. The league followed a promotion and relegation system, allowing teams to move up to the Malaysia Super League or drop down to the Malaysia M3 League based on their performance. In 2015, the Football Malaysia Limited Liability Partnership (FMLLP), later rebranded as the Malaysia Football League (MFL), was established as part of the privatization of the Malaysian football league system. This partnership involved all 24 teams from the Malaysia Super League and Malaysia Premier League, along with the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and MP & Silva, a global media and commercial advisor to FAM. Under the FMLLP's management, various entities in Malaysian football, including the Malaysia Super League, Malaysia FA Cup, Malaysia Cup, and Piala Sumbangsih, aimed to elevate and propel Malaysian football to new heights. The 2022 season marked the final season of the Premier League in its existing format, as the MFL planned to replace it with an expanded Super League and a new second-tier league in the future. From 2016 to 2018, the league was branded as the 100PLUS Liga Premier due to sponsorship arrangements. Johor Darul Ta'zim FC II emerged as the champions in the league's last season in 2022.
